Poodles

The exact origin of the Poodle is not known. They possibly originated in Germany and traveled with german troops in the 1400's to France and other countries. The standard sized poodle (15 inches or taller) is the oldest. Minatures were developed later.

Poodles were popularized in France where they became famous for their extreme hairstyles. In Germany they were used as water retrieving dogs. The haircuts originated from this work. They were trimmed short to allow agility in the water with certian areas, like their joints, kept long to protect them from the cold water.

Poodles are extremely intelligent, eager to please and easily trained. Because of this they have a rich history of performance in circus and street acts.

Poodles are lively, affectionate companion dogs that love a busy life. They can be high spirited but also quite laid back. They are easy going dogs and are very gentle with children. Their coats are tolerated by allergic people because they do not shed at all.
