Golden Retrievers
Golden Retrievers were first bred in the second half of the 19th century. In 1865, Sir Dudley Marjoribanks (Lord Tweedmouth) bred a yellow colour dog that came from Brighton, England to a light liver coloured Tweedwater Spaniel, which was a retrieving dog (now extinct). Through a structured line breeding over 20 years adding in Labrador Retrievers, Red Setters and possibly a Bloodhound, the Golden was developed. In 1908 they became registered as Golden Flatcoats, which changed to Golden Retriever in 1920.
Goldens are extremely intelligent and have an intense desire to please. They have accommodating and sensitive natures. They excel in fieldwork, showing and obedience. They are excellent companions and assistance for the disabled. They are gentle and have a low level of aggression as well as high compatibility with other animals. They are ideal family dogs; they adore children and want to be involved in family activities, indoor and out. They are natural retrievers and love the water.
